feature iconMicro Opportunities

With the blessing of @JamieT and @pengecom, this little slot is intended to be a regular fortnightly-ish feature, highlighting a specific micro volunteer action with either a charity, 'green' or advocacy flavour. It's an experiment, so if it's not well received, it will just simply cease to be. Hope you like it.

Charity Action - Be The Eyes For Research Projects

Galaxy ZooGalaxyZoo!

The Galaxy Zoo project contains photos of almost a quarter of a million galaxies which have been imaged with a camera attached to a robotic telescope (the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, no less). In order to understand how these galaxies formed, they need your help to classify them according to their shapes - a task at which your brain is better than even the fastest computer.

Briefly how it works, is that you will be shown an image of a galaxy and then be asked a series of questions about it. All you need to do is to look for features that mark out different types of galaxy and answer the questions as well as you can. So far, more than 200,000 people have taken part in the Galaxy Zoo project, having produced a wealth of valuable data and in the process sending telescopes on Earth and in space chasing after discoveries made by people just like you.

Ever wanted to become a star? Well, classifying one maybe the next best thing!

What is a feed?

A feed is an easy to use way of keeping up to date with lists of information on the web.

You normally subscribe to a feed using a feed reader which collects together all the feeds you subscribe to and also provides a way of unsubscribing should you get tired of a feed. Many browsers have feed readers built in, as do most email clients. In fact, a good way of thinking about feeds, is as a cross between subscribing to an email newsletter and regularly visiting website's news section.
