Fun week as guest speaker for Attend's social media training, met some lovely people and managed to put some names to faces :0) cream crackered now tho...
Great to meet you for real in Exeter and not via cyberspace.
Likewise! Hope you found the session useful - let's keep in touch re ivo socials :0)
Yes there was lots in the day to recap on, think about but also how the group felt about social Media, It was very useful to me and I will try to relay the message and info out to the wild wolley west. Yes I am still very motivated by the ivo socials so will let you know some of my approaches soon. Take care
Hi Jamie
Had great success in persuading West mids VC to join and the group I started is v useful. I am now trying to increase interest locally in the Telford & Wrekin Vol org group. To this end I would like to delete the Telford Management group. How do I do this?
Hi Bev, thats great that you're using the group so well. I can delete the other one for you - is it the Telford Volunteer Management partnership or the Volunteer Organisers group?
Thanks for the quick response Jamie. Its great getting a man to do some housekeeping for me! can you delete the Telford Management Partnership please? I can then direct everyone in Telford to the Volunteer Organisers Group. Thank you
And don't forget you can invite your colleagues to join the group - if you click on the invite link it opens up a form into which you can post multiple email addresses, so when people click on the link they are taken through sign up and added to the group once they have completed the process. Shout if you need any help with that!
Thanks for your help and support Jamie
If I see another volunteering publicity thing with bloody hands on it...
We love a good hand do Jewish Volunteering Network ;-)
lol, sorry if I've caused offence! I just wish orgs could come up with something a bit more imaginative...
Have to agree with this one Jamie. It's right up there for me with organisations saying that volunteers are the 'life blood' of their work, but then not actually supporting their volunteer manager or resourcing volunteering properly! Much more imagination needed all around...
So many orgs don't know the first thing about comms and never ask for help! Eg voluntary groups are always telling people to 'get involved', when people don't respond well to imperatives.
Lol agree with you Dan, though I think Get Involved is one of the new sections on ivo, maybe we should review it?,
actually think you're onto something here Jamie... bloody hands raised would be a new take on an otherwise overused image... Now we just need a role that may have blood involved and a catchy tagline...
Oooh that's dark Simon! A role that involves blood, assisting with countryside vets maybe?!
one for halloween next year maybe! mountain rescue? ambulance first responder?
Anyone fancy doing a write up on the Giving White paper - views, analysis etc - for a homepage feature?
I'm in Brussels and otherwise engaged at the moment; is next week too late for you?
Next week is fine Dan, thanks! We're after a balanced view, there seem to be some good initiatives in there so it would be good to highlight these; have fun over there :o)
Anyone got any tps on dealing with difficult volunteers? In particular tackiling vols with personal hygeine issues that work in a public setting - I have to advise someone and I'm a tad worried about the best approach to take!
Years ago I handlied this really badly by NOT saying anything. The volunteer was increasingly left out of discussions, team banter, etc and eventually left because he felt isolated.
A colleague, in a different situation, was brilliant. With a few quiet words, he said "I think I should tell you that you deodorant isn't working very well."
This worked. The message got through and the volunteer's personal hygiene issues stopped being a problem almost overnight.
By the way, we later discovered that this volunteer was also going through personal problems at home and had really just been neglecting himself. It is possible that he was suffering from depression at the time.
I have used "he" throughout this without wishing to indicate that either a man or woman was involved.
Thanks Dave, useful stuff... I rink this person may have a mild learning disability, though they seem quite capable. The issue was that they soiled themselves which upset a lot of other volunteers and it seems this is not the first time they have had such issues. The team want to ask them to leave, which in itself is very tricky particularly when they have been around for a long time...
I've had to do this with paid staff in a previous working role. It can't be ignored, particularly in a customer service role/working with others etc. Good interpersonal skills really count along the lines of Dave's post. It can uncover other issues too; it did with this person and it gave us the opportunity to put a bit of an informal action plan together.
Jamie just signed up Eastern counties rugby and trying to get to grips with it after the course last week any advice would be welcome
Hey there, you're doing well so far - just shout if you need any tips! The i-volunteer group you've applied to join is just for i-volunteers only though :o)

If it's on your wall you should seethe word 'actions' underneath it with a small arrow - click on that and you can either edit or remove it. Let me know if this works!
